How to Design a QR Code Sticker That Actually Gets Scanned

Scan rate is everything. Here's how to design a QR sticker customers actually use.

A QR code that doesn't get scanned is just ink. Scan rate is the foundation of any post-purchase program — capture, reviews, and retention all depend on it. Here's how to design a sticker that customers actually scan.

Give them a reason

The biggest driver of scan rate isn't design — it's the offer. "Scan to claim your reward," "Scan to win," or "Scan for a free gift" dramatically outperform "Scan me" or "Scan to leave a review." Lead with value.

Make it scannable

Technical quality matters:

  • High contrast — dark dots on a light background scan most reliably.
  • Adequate size — a 1.5–2 inch code is a safe target for most products.
  • Quiet zone — leave clear space around the code so cameras lock on.
  • Test on real devices before a full run.

Place it where it's seen

A covered, on-product sticker — on the lid or front of the product — stays with the customer during use, not just at unboxing. That on-product visibility is a major reason these stickers hit 20%+ scan rates while loose inserts languish at 1–2%.

Add pattern interruption

A sticker that visually stands out — bright border, peel-to-reveal, "Scan here" callout — interrupts the routine of opening a package and prompts the scan.

Brand it

The code should feel like part of your brand, with your colors and a clear call to action, so scanning feels safe and on-brand rather than suspicious.

Stay compliant on marketplaces

On Amazon, use a covered code, keep incentives on-platform, and don't gate rewards on reviews.
